A little late off the line here but why not keep a diary of Harper's blatant lies. We can add to this over time. Here's the lie that prompted the thread:
On Wednesday, Mr. Harper told CFPL-TV in an interview, when asked about the repatriation of the four soldiers: "The DND spoke to the families and not all the families were in agreement, and on that particular occasion on the arrival of the casket unless all the families want it open, it is a private time."

However, on the day the four coffins were brought back, Mr. O'Connor said the families were not consulted. "No they weren't consulted," he said then. "We're trying to, I'm trying to bring in a policy that covers all families for all events."

The mother of a Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan says she told Mr. Harper that the return of fallen soldiers' bodies should be accessible to the public, but was told that "people have to stop focusing on how many people are being killed."
"I believe that Mr. Harper's assertion that he had standing instructions to consult with [military] families was a bald-faced lie," Mr. Dosanjh said. The Prime Minister's Office did not respond to a request for comment yesterday.
Haven't done a very good job keeping this thread updated but thought I would bring it back from the dead:

Canada won't ''sell out to the almighty dollar'' when it
comes to talking human rights with China, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said
Wednesday.

On Wednesday, The Globe and Mail delivered the knockout punch to Harper's and the Conservatives' evasions and denials. The headline summed it all up, “What Ottawa doesn't want you to know: Government was told detainees often faced 'extrajudicial executions, disappearances, torture and detention without trial'.”

It is amazing how the confines of power will produce such consistent behavior in such a range on individuals. At any time, when the powerful must maintain the support of the people when committing actions that are impossible to support we see the Paul Martin diversions and now Harper's lies.
I think the question is, how do we impact the system whereby we can snub out the factors that appear to produce this behavior?
My own personal opinion is that transparancy is the key. There should not be any private decisions within a political party. All documents, conversations regarding the public forum should be public in order to ensure public awareness and scrutiny. How this could be achieved would take some careful planning, but it seems obvious that shaming is the most powerful mechanism is the best way to keeping the rabble in line. _________________ "Your argument smells of epiphenomenalism, it wreaks of it!"
